The Design Museum throws open its doors for an exciting day of fun, family friendly activities. Sign up for updates by email to keep updated with our family programme of workshops and events.

Programme

Details of just some of the activities you can take part in on Family Day:

Design Action Packs 11am - 4pm

Throughout the day every child visiting the Design Museum will be given a free Design Action Pack
containing observation and creativity exercises to make their visit more enjoyable and informative.

Drawing areas will be situated within the galleries, enabling children to create their own designs for futuristic buildings, pieces of furniture and design products drawing on inspiration from throughout the museum.

Kid’s Activity Workshops, 12 pm - 3.00pm

Design Museum Space
Drop in workshops will offer children the chance to design and make cool keyrings, badges, fabulous hats and hair pieces, as well as colourful finger puppets. These workshops will be led by design and education specialists.

Balloon Workshop 11am - 3.00 pm

Throughout the Museum
Designer and Illustrator Richard Hogg, formally of the innovative design company Airside and designer of our fabulous Family Day logo will lead an interactive workshop, encouraging visitors throughout the day, to add to an ever growing object made out of balloons. The final piece will take the form of a costume or an object that will provide the backdrop for the Fabulous Fashion Photo Shoot. This workshop is inspired by fashion photographer Tim Walker’s exhibition which will be open in the second gallery.

Exhibition Introduction Talk: Richard Rogers + Architects – From the House to the City

12.00pm - 12.15pm - 1st Floor Gallery
This short introduction to the Richard Rogers exhibition will give families an informative overview of the work on display which includes models, and architectural drawings.

Meet the Designer: Guy Parker-Rees – Children’s Book Illustrator

12.30 - 1.15pm – Education Centre
Guy's lively illustrations have added warmth and colour to over forty children’s books and his delightful images engage children of all ages. Join Guy for an informal workshop as he explains his illustration process and demonstrates simple drawing techniques to make your illustrating dreams a reality.

Meet the Designer: Sato Hisao – Product Designer

2pm - 2.45pm – Education Centre
Japanese product designer Sato Hisao creates unique playful characters
through paper engineering. With a mission to make design a hands-on and fun experience for all ages, Sato believes that playfulness should be the most important essence in our lives. Inspired by nature – animals, insects, pebbles and more, Sato discusses his work, and will lead a short workshop and opportunity for families to try their hand at playful paper engineering.

Exhibition Introduction Talk: Tim Walker & Sam Hecht

2.45 pm - 3.00pm - 2nd Floor Galleries
The second tour of the day will give visitors a short overview of the works of Product Designer Studio Industrial Facility and Fashion Photographer, Tim Walker.

Fabulous Finale Photo Shoot

2.45pm - 4pm - Riverside Hall
Before leaving the museum families will have the chance to pose for a
fashion photo shoot, modelling their self-designed hats and accessories. The photographs will appear for all to see after the day on the Design Museum website www.designmuseum.org. The funkiest family photo will win a Design Museum family membership pass and goodie bag.
