AMIT PITARU
Both in his collaborative work with James Paterson on their insertsilence site, and in solo projects, Amit Pitaru embraces the often sterile process of coding in the emotionally expressive way he would play a musical instrument.
A classically trained jazz pianist, Pitaru was born in Jerusalem in 1974 but has lived and worked in New York for five years. He met Paterson at a conference in London in 2000 only to discover that they lived on the same Brooklyn street.
Neither Pitaru nor Paterson has any formal training in computer programming, yet they have taught themselves how to code and how to construct their own tools. They work in an improvisational way by simultaneously creating animated images from computer code with these tools and then refining the result.
