Design Mart
Birdfeeder by Nadine Jarvis, 2006
20 September – 28 January 2007
As part of our mission to nurture emerging design talent, the Design Museum once again hosts Design Mart, the annual survey of new designers in the UK. Design Mart features the work of seven hand-selected product and furniture designers who have graduated within the last five years. Among this year’s Design Mart highlights are Philip Worthington’s surreal Shadow Monsters, the sophisticated simplicity of Max Lamb’s furniture and ‘Rest in Pieces’, Nadine Jarvis’ poetic approach to distributing crematoria ashes.
In a bursary scheme, generously funded by Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, the Design Museum is awarding £50,000 in grants to help a selection of designers, featured in Design Mart 2005 and 2006, to develop their careers.
The five grants – each of £10,000 – have been awarded to Assa Ashuach who experiments with rapid prototyping technology in innovative lighting and furniture; Committee for their playful Kebab lamps and printed wallpaper designs; &made whose range of Climatised Objects address issues of world climate change and natural disaster; product designer Nadine Jarvis for her poetic cremation urns and bird feeders; and Peter Marigold for his original approach to temporary shelving and storage systems for nomadic lifestyles. Each designer or design team takes a very different approach to their work, yet all have proven their commitment to design and to exploring materials, processes and themes.
